Biography
Dr. J. Ryan Macdonell is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience in primary and revision joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. HE performs over 400 joint replacements each year. Dr. Macdonell uses the most advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures, including the anterior approach for total hip replacement, which allows for faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays. Dr. Macdonell performs computer-navigated and robotically- assisted total and partial knee replacement as well. In addition, he has undergone specialized training and has expertise in revision hip and knee replacement. He is proud to offer cementless knee replacement surgery and the Persona IQ smart knee replacement. Dr. Macdonell performs joint replacement surgery at the Outpatient Surgery Center of Asheville, Mission Memorial Hospital, and Mission McDowell Hospital. He sees patients at the Asheville Orthopedics Biltmore Park and Marion offices.
Dr. Macdonell received his medical education at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he also completed an internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery. He then completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the University of Virginia. Dr. Macdonell is highly skilled and experienced. Prior to joining Asheville Orthopaedic Associates, he practiced and served as a faculty member at Medstar Georgetown Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
In addition to providing patient care, Dr. Macdonell is an accomplished researcher. He has contributed to numerous peer reviewed journals, publications, book chapters and lectures, and has presented both nationally and internationally at some of the most esteemed symposia in the world. He has held several leadership positions, serving as the Chief of Joint Surgery, as well as the Orthopaedic Surgery Peer Review Committee Chairman at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center. His philosophy of care is to return people with joint pain to active fulfilling lives with both non-operative and operative interventions.
In his free time, Dr. Macdonell enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the beauty of western North Carolina.
